Welcome to Songberry Organic Farm

Seasonal Vegetables

You can regularly find our vegetables at the Herb & Spice on Bank St. (just south of Gilmour) in Ottawa, Life Organic, and The Red Apron. We've also been supplying a number of other businesses, including the Sandy Hill Co-op, Dalhousie Day Care, Fourth Avenue Wine Bar, Nature's Buzz, and Cafe 349. Contact us or check out Facebook page to see where else to find our veggies!

WHAT WE GROW, HOW, AND WHEN:

We usually grow over thirty different types of vegetables and herbs, including literally hundreds of different varieties. We buy certified organic seed whenever possible; many of them are heirloom and/or open-pollinated varieties, although we do grow some modern hybrids as well, when they meet our criteria. We select our varieties based on flavour and eating (not shipping!) quality, and to provide a diversity a vegetables over as long a season as possible.

Our farm, and all of its products, are certified organic to the Canadian and Quebec Organic Standards by EcoCert Canada. This means that we do not use any synthetic chemical fertilizers or pesticides, strive to maintain and enhance air, soil, and water quality, and keep detailed records of everything that comes onto, goes off of, and gets done on the farm. Beyond that, in our ongoing efforts to bring you the highest quality, most nutritious veggies possible, we're continually researching and trying out ways to raise and maintain the fertility and mineral balance of our soil. By investing in expert advice and carefully selected organic soil amendments, we are feeding the soil that feeds the plants that feed you. The result is healthy, vigorous plants that are resistant to attacks from insects and disease, able to thrive and produce vegetables that hopefully impart some of their health and vigour to those who consume them!

Here's what you might expect to find over the course of the season (availability will vary depending on the weather and growing conditions):

Early June: spinach, swiss chard, beet greens, oriental greens

Late June/Early July: all of the above plus peas (shell, sugar snap, and snow), garlic scapes, baby beets, carrots, and strawberries!

Mid July: Add beans, cucumbers, broccoli, cauliflower, zucchini, and maybe even some early tomatoes!

August: Tomatoes, peppers, eggplant, beans, summer squash, broccoli, cauliflower, carrots, beets, garlic...

September/October: Summer crops hold out till the first frost, and potatoes, cabbage, and squash are ready. When the nights get cold, it's back to spinach, Oriental greens, kale, chard, and if we're lucky, maybe peas!
